Patent leather has a glossy surface coating. Ordinary cream polish or conditioner does not turn another leather into patent leather, and a product for absorbent smooth leather is not automatically appropriate for the coating.

Keep coloured patent surfaces from rubbing against other objects in storage. Clean and fully dry the footwear before enclosing it. Aggressive rubbing can make damage worse, and a cleaner cannot replace a missing coating.
